How to choose handheld laser barcode scanners

  • Laser vs imager — Laser reads printed 1D codes quickly and cheaply. It cannot read QR codes or barcodes on a phone screen — if you need either, choose a 2D imager instead.
  • Scan rate — Higher scans-per-second means less aiming at a busy checkout.
  • Durability — Check the drop rating if the scanner will be used in a warehouse rather than at a counter.
  • Interface — USB HID keyboard emulation needs no drivers and works with any POS software.

Frequently asked questions

Can a laser scanner read QR codes?

No. Laser scanners read 1D linear barcodes only. For QR, DataMatrix or screen-displayed codes you need a 2D imager.

Is it plug and play?

Yes — connect over USB and it types scanned codes into the active field.

Is OEM available?

Yes, including housing colour, logo and packaging.
