How to choose 2d barcode scanners

  • 2D vs 1D — Choose 2D if you accept mobile payments, e-tickets, loyalty QR codes or any barcode displayed on a screen. 1D laser is cheaper but reads printed linear codes only.
  • Wired or wireless — Wired USB is plug-and-play and never needs charging. Wireless suits large counters, warehouse aisles and stock-taking away from the till.
  • Form factor — Handheld for general counter use; omni-directional desktop units let staff scan one-handed without aiming.
  • Interface — USB HID keyboard emulation works with virtually any POS software without drivers.

Will it scan from a phone screen?

Yes — 2D imagers read screen-displayed codes, which laser scanners cannot.

Do I need to install software?

No. In HID keyboard mode the scanner types the barcode into whatever field has focus.

Can it be configured?

Yes — prefix/suffix, symbology enabling and scan mode are set by scanning configuration barcodes from the manual.
